Is camellia oil effective in protecting pruning shears?
Camellia oil ( Camellia oleifera ) has been used for centuries in Japan to protect steel tools, especially pruning shears. But is it really effective?
Why do secateurs rust?
Carbon steel pruning shears are prized for their exceptional sharpness and precision. However, carbon steel is susceptible to oxidation: when in contact with moisture or sap, a thin layer of rust may appear.
Regular maintenance is therefore essential to extend their lifespan.
The properties of camellia oil
- Antioxidant : forms a thin protective film that prevents air and moisture from reaching the metal.
- Non-resinous : does not stick or go rancid, unlike some vegetable oils.
- Natural and odorless : solvent-free, gentle on hands.
- Versatile : can also protect knife blades, woodworking tools and even nourish the wood of handles.
How to apply camellia oil to secateurs
- Clean the blade : remove sap and dirt with a cleaning eraser , or with a soft cloth.
- Dry thoroughly : no moisture should remain on the metal.
- Apply the oil :
- With a cloth : place a few drops of camellia oil - then rub the blades and metal parts.
- With a reservoir applicator : more precise and practical, the oil applicator diffuses the right amount of oil directly onto the areas to be protected. The felt tip allows you to quickly cover the surface, without excess and without getting your hands dirty. - Repeat regularly : ideally after each use.
Camellia oil or other maintenance oils?
- Camellia oil : particularly appreciated for Japanese carbon steel tools. Its fine texture easily penetrates the micro-roughness of the metal, forming a very homogeneous protective film. It does not go rancid and remains fluid even in winter.
- Other natural maintenance oils : Some vegetable oils (such as linseed oil) or white mineral oils are also effective at preventing rust. They may be slightly thicker, which gives them a good hold on fixed parts, but they can also leave a greasy film.
- In practice : All of these oils create a barrier against oxidation. The choice depends on your preference, the nature of your tools, and your use. Camellia oil remains the traditional Japanese standard, while other oils can offer equally long-lasting protection, with a slightly different feel or finish.
Proven effectiveness
Yes: Camellia oil is recognized by Japanese manufacturers and blacksmiths as one of the best ways to prevent rust. Combined with regular cleaning and careful application (with a cloth or applicator), it ensures a long-lasting sharpness and protects your tools for many years.
